Strumbie Island is a story based program to help support and encourage the development of emotional literacy in young children. Highly engaging and interactive, Strumbie Island helps children recognise, understand, handle and appropriately express their own and other people’s emotions and behaviour.

Strumbie Island was devised by Ronnie Rowbotham, a Barnardo's worker based at the Hartbeat project in the North East of England. As such it has already proved itself in mainstream settings and small group work. It is a valuable addition to the repertoire of tools available to those working with vulnerable children and a useful support to those involved in Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL).

Using the interactive CD-ROM and accompanying workbook, children join Billy as he travels to the mysterious Strumbie Island. All the people he meets can only have one feeling at a time. Discover how Billy gets on when he meets Dol (doldrums), Brag, Stomp (anger), Patience, Mimi (selfish) and others.

Supported by teaching plans and resources, the ten chapters in the story can be used as a ten-week programme covering themes such as:

•  getting on and falling out

•  saying no to bullying

•  going for goals

•  relationships

•  feeling good about yourself

There are a series of five additional activities including:

•  a singalong Strumbie Song

•  Bully's Baggage where the player has to choose Billy's response to Brag's name calling

•  Dol's Day activity which promotes a positive attitude to life and learning and challenges negative choices

Children are encouraged to record their own narrative and sound effects, and to act out the emotions that the characters are experiencing.

Full audio support, pause and playback options.

Printable lesson plans, clip art, record keeping and other useful resources.
